8 Boys and Wanting a Girl - Channel 4 Documentary

When deciding what documentary I should write about I went onto channel 4 documentaries on 4OD and had a look through. After reading a few of them I found one that sounded very interesting, it was called 8 Boys and Wanting a Girl. It looked really interesting and coming from a big family I thought I might be able to relate to it. The documentary looked at women who have a psychological condition called "Gender Disappointment" were woman desire a particulate gender and don't feel complete without having a child with the desired sex.
The documentary followed 4 woman, 1 from America and 3 from England. Each all had boys. 3 Woman having 4 boys and the other woman having 8. All the woman were tiring to have a girl, and tried through different methods. Mainly using a method call GD were woman can choose what sex they want their baby to have in a method similar to IVF. 2 woman in the programe tried to have a daughter this way with one of the woman having tried for the 3rd time each costing over $10,00 the other tiring for the 2nd time. Another woman tried to have a 5th child hoping for a daughter naturally and the last woman hoped she hadn't hit menopause before she thought it was to late.
It was an eye opener to see woman try to have a preferred baby, I always thought woman were happy with what they had and if they didn't get it they would just be thankful. But the documentary amazing to watch to see how desperate woman were to have the daughter. Having 2 brothers and 2 sister I don't have the feeling that if I had children did I want a girl or a boy and watching the documentary made me realize that I don't really care what child gender I have.
I also think the documentary was very bias. It only showed these 4 woman and how desperate they were to want a girl. I think that it would make any spectator watching it believe that all woman hold this view about girl. What backed up this argument was seeing the husband to a woman about he didn't understand what it was about his wife the made her want to have a daughter so badly. I think what would've made the documentary more dramatic would've been a woman who had 4 daughter but wanted a son. This would've had a really good back up on the view the documentary was trying to get across.

  1. This sounds interesting nut try to sum up how you felt manipulated. Discuss the techniques used to get you involved. Mention some of the issues that we have already raised. Was there a voice over? Your last paragraph is the one that would interest an examiner. Say more about why you think it was biased.
